Early 1800s, Directoire Period Painted and Gold Leafed Lavabo

Crafted in France, this early 19th century Directoire Lavabo is hand painted, and delicately finished with gold leaf. The piece is faux meuble, meaning simply that the tole is painted in such a way that it resembles marble. The pierced brass gallery creates a sort of balcony, behind which rests the gold leaf painted finials on top and bottom. Most notably, the lavabo is true Directoire, created in the early 1800s. In this piece, it’s a style exemplified best in the whimsical gold leafed face of a muse which rests behind the faucet.

19th Century French Louis XVI Hand-Carved Gilt Bevelled Mirror

This Louis XVI hand-carved mirror is truly magnificent. The piece dates back to the 19th century and is gilt, meaning simply yet elegantly that it’s covered in gold leaf, and features a beveled center and side panels. The top is adorned with a pair of birds on a wreath, a flaming torch, quivered arrows, and finally gorgeous garlands cascading over either side.  The piece may have originally been created as a wedding gift as a pair of birds were depicted to symbolize love and were most often seen included in gifts for newlyweds. The flame and arrows were symbols as well, for longevity and justice respectively.

Unique Italian Empire Console with Matching Mirror Circa 1830

This beautiful Italian Empire set is comprised of a matching mirror and console and was created in the early 19th century circa 1830. The piece is detailed in hand carvings. The gold leaf gild work contrasts quite well against the painted brick red background. The piece is adorned with Egyptian influences and style; note the sphinxes, crown, and acanthus leaves for example.
