This elegant Louis XVI marquetry desk features most notably an exquisite floral design on the front, interior, and sides. The piece dates back to the mid 20th century and is known as a ‘bureau de cylindre,’ or cylinder desk, pertaining to the revolving cylindrical top which can be opened and closed. The piece features three small drawers, pigeon holes, and a secret panel inside the revolving cylinder. There are also three large drawers below the writing surface, and finally bronze mounts throughout.

19th Century French Louis XVI Hand-Carved Gilt Bevelled Mirror

This Louis XVI hand-carved mirror is truly magnificent. The piece dates back to the 19th century and is gilt, meaning simply yet elegantly that it’s covered in gold leaf, and features a beveled center and side panels. The top is adorned with a pair of birds on a wreath, a flaming torch, quivered arrows, and finally gorgeous garlands cascading over either side.  The piece may have originally been created as a wedding gift as a pair of birds were depicted to symbolize love and were most often seen included in gifts for newlyweds. The flame and arrows were symbols as well, for longevity and justice respectively.

Louis XVI 19th Century Hand-Carved and Gold Leaf Marble Top Console

This incredibly elegant and stately freestanding Louis XVI console table dates to the 19th century and features immaculately hand-carved wood. The piece sports cylindrical fluted legs with a number of contours and details. At the base, each leg is brought together by a beautiful urn topped stretcher hosting a flame. Following the piece upwards, the legs connect to a magnificent apron with a classic Louis XVI design, in this instance an impressive reticulated open weave. The piece is hand-painted with gold leaf in its entirety. Finally, resting atop the apron sits the original contoured Carrara marble.

French 19th Century Transition Period Hand-Carved Giltwood Console with Marble Top

This incredible Transition Period console table is in excellent condition for its 18th century origins. The transition period refers to the brief time in French history between the ruling of Louis XV and Louis XVI, and both emperors influences are seen here. Louis XV most notably is seen in the curvature of the marble top, apron, and curvature of the top of the legs. As we transition from the top of the piece to the base, the legs transition from the Louis XV curvature to the straightness found in Louis XVI. The piece is made of hand-carved wood and features hoofed feet, a beautiful urn connecting the legs at the base, acanthus leaves, a greek key motif on the apron, and draped hand-carved ribbons. The console is covered in hand-painted gold leaf and the contoured marble is original to the piece.

18th Century Austrian Hand-Carved and Painted Cabinet Accented with Gold Leaf

The piece features raised panels on the sides, raised floral elements are covered in gold leaf and head to the pedestals with acanthus leaves and scroll work. A carved crest and urn sit at the top of the piece with ribbons of joining tassels flowing to the exterior. The cabinet is adorned with gold leaf accented paintings, features unusually curved shelves originally used to display fine dish-ware, and finally features the beautiful original glass. This magnificent rock crystal and bronze d’ore chandelier comes from the Paris residence of the Baron James-Mayer de Rothschild, the legendary l’Hotel Talleyrand. At what was probably the most exquisite “hotel particulier” in Paris, the Rothschilds’ entertained lavishly. Historically, when the building was purchased by the U. S. government after World War II, l’Hotel Talleyrand became the site of the administration of the Marshall Plan to rebuild Europe. The building continues to host international, political, and cultural events bearing witness to this opulent lifestyle today The value of rock crystal is determined by its weight, clarity, and size, a trifecta in which this chandelier excels.
