French 19th Century Bronze of a Whippet Dog, Signed ‘P. J. Mene’
French 19th century bronze statue of a dog, whippet bread, signed P. J. Mene, mounted on a thick oval marble base with plaque reading, Mene - 1810 - 1874. Pierre Jules Mene, or P. J. Mene, as he usually signed his sculptures, was known to make human figures, as well as many different animals, making him popular with hunters. The whippet is a delicate, slim animal, making figures of whippets difficult to make. While Mene made many figures of whippets, in various positions, these figures became rare and costly over the years. The one we have here is represented happily trotting along in the grass.
