This classic Empire writing table is made of stunning mahogany and features detailed bronze mounts balanced with precision. Dating back to the 19th century, the French antique piece sports bronze Egyptian heads above each leg. Each head is angled to face the room on the diagonal. Continuing down the tapered legs, below the profiled figures, we find fantastic lions’ paw feet. The table’s apron is adorned with bronze mounts, and an elaborate escutcheon on each of two drawers. The mounts on the apron offer one final detail on each side; the winged head of Hermes resting in the center of a diamond. While the piece is classic in style, it is of course rare in its balanced, stately beauty.
