Rare Find Comes To Royal Street Antique Shop

1920’s Erard and Mercier grand piano discovered in Paris and now on display in New Orleans
New Orleans, July 21, 2004 – During their last buying trip in Paris, France, Henry Granet, proprietor of the French Antique Shop, discovered a rare “Erard” grand piano in pristine condition and immediately had it shipped to their galleries on Royal Street.
“In the 45 years of dealing in antiques, I have occasionally come across a piece that has literally taken my breath away and this was one of those pieces.” Said Granet.
“Among the things that make it so special are the exquisite details on the ‘Mercier’ designed cabinet – worthy of this magnificent instrument created by the famous ‘Sebastian Erard’ craftsmen in Paris in 1920. This piano carries with it the double escarpent action originally invented by Erard in the early 1820’s and perfected by him and his staff over the course of the century,” Granet continued.
The semi-concert grand piano was tuned recently by local piano tuner, Matthew McWilliams, of New Orleans
“Out of approximately 2,000 pianos I tune every year, I may come across one Erard, but never of this quality and pristine condition. The cabinet and key action is excellent.” McWilliams said.
The Erard grand piano displayed in the galleries of the French Antique Shop is inscribed with the proud signatures of “Erard” and of “Mercier,” the award winning ebeniste who designed the exquisite mahogany and ormolu encrusted piano case in 1920. It exemplifies the finest accomplishments of both these renowned personages.

Recognized as one of the greatest (and oldest) builders of pianos in France, Sebastian Erard established the Erard firm in Paris in 1777. His pianoforte attracted the attention and admiration of Beethoven, whose compositions could not be fully realized on the Viennese instruments of his day.
The introduction of this new action coincided with Franz Liszt’s first visit to Paris at the age of thirteen. Liszt was enthralled by Erard’s grand piano and remained a loyal patron throughout his career.. The Erard family reciprocated by providing instruments as well as the use of their sumptuous reception area, known as “one of the most important music rooms of Paris” as a venue for many of Liszt’s concerts and recitals.
The prestige of the Erard grand piano was further enhanced when the foremost Parisian cabinet makers were commissioned to design sumptuous and often unique piano cases for the elegant salons and drawing rooms of 19th and early 20th century Europe and America. Using the finest and most exotic woods, framed in exquisitely chased gold-plated bronze mounts, these remarkable pianos successfully married esthetic genius and musical integrity.
The French Antique Shop was founded in 1927 in Paris by Marie and Marcel Granet, parents of Henry Granet and Nicole Granet Friedlander, and grandparents of Marc Friedlander, all current owners.
In 1939, prior to the outbreak of the Second World War, Marie and Marcel came to America, planning to
re-establish their antiques business in Houston, Texas. During a stopover in New Orleans, the Granets fell in love with New Orleans and the French Quarter and they proceeded no further on their journey.

New Orleans, Royal Street Antique Gallery Expands European Inventory

Gallery expanded to over 20,000 feet of show space to accommodate these precious European treasures

New Orleans, LA — The French Antique Shop, located at 225 Royal Street, has recently opened an expanded showroom, immediately adjacent to its present location.

The new showroom increases the display area of antique furnishings at the French Antique Shop to more than 20,000 square feet.

According to Henry Granet, proprietor, “The demand for European antiques in America has grown dramatically, and we, too, must expand our display and storage areas for these unique and historic home furnishings.”

The French Antique Shop specializes in crystal and fine-cut glass chandeliers, gold-leaf and decorative mirrors, statuary and indoor fountains, fireplace mantels, decorative porcelains, and furniture, such as dining room sets, breakfronts and sideboards, clocks, fine wood tables, and other home furnishing accessories.

All merchandise is imported from Europe, with many items undergoing renovation, refurbishment, and repair in the Shop’s atelier.

The Shop serves clients throughout the United States, the Pacific Rim and Latin and South America.

Granet added, “We have, from time to time, experienced a definite decline in our ability to obtain fine merchandise. So, when these items do become available, we must be in a position to place them in our facility and display them. This new area will allow us to continue to offer a wide variety of very special merchandise.”

Antique Treasures Re-discovered “In the Attic” Now For Sale

New Orleans, July 24, 2003 – During their recent showroom expansion of the upper floors, the French Antique Shop re-discovered hundreds of exquisite antiques, collected from Europe over the past few decades and these are now being made available for the public and collectors.
“We kept finding the most amazing merchandise, items that we had forgotten about, or set aside for one reason or another. That’s when we decided to devote for a limited time a certain portion of our revamped second floor showroom to displaying and discounting for rapid sales these lost treasures”
That’s Henry Granet, proprietor of The French Antique Shop, located at 225 Royal Street, in the heart of New Orleans’ famed French Quarter.
The “Treasures from the Attic” Sale is now underway, and is the first Sale for the Shop since it opened in 1947.
“It just seemed like the timing is correct, and the merchandise is so special, that we wanted to do something a little different for us,” Granet continued.
The Treasures from the Attic Sale coincides with the recently renovated street entrance to the three upper levels of the Shop. The entryway, separate from the main floor showroom, allows the visitor to use an elevator to reach the second and third floor showrooms, which have been completely revamped and re-stocked.
More than 20,000 square feet of enlarged showroom space featuring fine antique furniture, chandeliers, specialized lighting, mirrors, statuary, porcelains, mantels and other decorative items, is now open to the public.
The French Antique Shop specializes in antiques from Europe.
“My parents purchased this location in 1947, and established one of the premier antique businesses in this City. Today, we are a destination for designers and lovers of European antiques, who come here from all over the world.”
The French Antique Shop’s Treasures from the Attic Sale is for a limited time. After that, the space will again be used to display fine, one-of-a-kind merchandise that is constantly being brought to New Orleans from Europe.
